Knife Skills: How to Peel an Orange like a Chef

One of the most important skills in the kitchen is how to use a knife. Each week, we introduce the skills necessary to accomplish 1 task in a cleaner, more efficient way. Today we focus on knife skills for how to peel an orange.

It’s citrus season! Oranges are so juicy and delicious, but so so difficult to peel. Today we learn how to use your chef’s knife to peel an orange. It does take a little bit of practice, but once you get the hang of it, it’s the cleanest, fastest way to get those oranges out of their rinds.

Always have a clean knife, cutting board and towel (you’ll want that nearby for juicy fruits, like oranges)

Let’s go!

Step by Step Instructions on How to Peel an Orange

Step 1: Slice off the top and bottom of the orange. To find the top, look for the side with the little “belly button”. Then you simply slice that off in a straight line, and repeat on the bottom.

Step 2: Using the middle of the blade, gently slice down the side of the orange to remove the rind. Rind is just a fancy way of saying “peel”.

Step 3: Rotate the orange and slice down the side again. Make sure you line up your slices so you remove all of the rind.

Step 4: Continue until all of the rind is removed. You want to take away all of the rind and very little of the fruit.

Step 5: Now you’re ready to eat (or supreme) your orange.
